Mock Combat for Cosplay

What Is Mock Combat for Cosplay?
Mock Combat for Cosplay is a workshop that I’ve put together for conventions. Over the past few years of attending cons it has bothered me when I watch cosplay scenes or see people working on them where the combat in their scenes are either poorly done, dangerous of both. Having so many friends in the industry, who have seen even worse things than I have, and hearing their stories, it was suggested with my back ground in stage combat that I start doing workshops for conventions. After a little thought, some conversations with others who have been doing conventions much longer than I have, and hearing their horror stories about things they had seen, I decided to try the workshop out. I was quite excited at it was very well received and very popular with the attendees, and so I’ve made it available to any convention that has me as a guest.

Do I need to be a Cosplayer to attend?
No, the workshop is open to everyone. It was started not only to help cosplayers with their scene work, but also for anyone else that is interested in putting together fight work that is not only great looking but very safe for all parties involved. So anyone who likes is invited to attend the workshop.

Is this one of those we sit and you talk kind of workshops?
Not at all, the only way to learn this kind of work is to actually be on your feet doing it. You will quickly see that the process and techniques are not only easy to learn, but are also quite fun. Some people have sat and watched the workshops, but they have not gotten as much from them as the people who are participating.

Is there anything I need for the workshop?
The only things you need are your self, a willingness to learn, and a good attitude. The nice thing about the system I use is that almost anyone can do it. Regardless of height, weight, age, gender. The only thing I do ask is that if you have severe medical conditions, heart problems or are pregnant, that it would be probably be a better idea for you to watch. My prime goal is safety, and the work can be strenuous, there is also no harm in trying it, and if you find that it is causing you problems to just sit and watch the rest of the workshop.

You mentioned the Technique you use what is that?
I use a combination of techniques that I’ve learned over the years studying with different fight masters and teachers, that I combine to bring the safest elements to the workshop. One of the great things about the methods I use, is that the two people fighting are actually creating it using what works best for their bodies, and moment styles. I also teach what I call “sequenced moves” these are moves like punches, slaps, kicks, and if there is time permitting in the workshop, I cover beginning basics with weapons.

What background do you have for teaching this kind of workshop?
I’ve been teaching stage combat workshops for over 15 years, in High Schools, Jr. High Schools, and some small colleges. I’ve been fortunate enough to study under some amazing fight directors including the late Claude Caux, who taught for years at Marcel Marceau’s academy in France. I was the Assistant Fight Captain for the National Tour and Broadway production of Peter Pan, starring Cathy Rigby. As a fight director I’ve been lucky enough to stage fights for such shows as Romeo and Juliet (3 different productions), Extremities, Man of LaMancha (4 Different productions), Wait Until Dark, Runaways, A Streetcar Named Desire, Twelfth Night, Midsummer Nights Dream, Othello, Peter Pan, Pippin, Hair, the world premiere workshop of The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Southwest premiere of Hello Again, and served as the violence consultant for the American Premier of Ridley Walker, to name just a few.

How can we get this workshop at our convention?:
It’s very simple, contact your convention and let them know that you would like me as a guest, or if I am already a guest, chances are I will already be talking to them about doing the workshop at the convention. Your con staff can get in touch with me through my con info page.
